Overview of Items

This guide covers all the details of using Items in Learnosity, and gives you the full breakdown of options and features available when working with Items. Throughout this guide you will find links to Item related tutorials that cover different aspects of using Items at an advanced level.

Item Preview

The Preview allows authors to see how the Item will appear to the student.

When in Item Preview, you will also see the Show Answer button and score indicator; check answers to Questions that belong to this Item and see the overall Item score with these options.

For more information on Item scoring, please see this page.

Item Edit

The Edit area is where you will name your Item, add Questions and Features, and apply columns.

The Item Reference will appear on the top left of the Item. This will only be visible to authors. Reference numbers have to be unique and are automatically generated in the form OrganisationName_Number. These numbers are editable and must only contain ASCII printable characters, except double quotes, single quotes with no more than 150 characters.

To make any edits to Questions or Features, click on the pencil icon on the grey toolbar to the right of the Question/Feature. For more information on Item editing, check out our tutorial on how to add Questions to Items here.

If you want to change question order you can do so by simply dragging and dropping the questions while in the Item Edit view. Question order may be important for reporting purposes or if you are using EBSR scoring.

Item Side Navigation

On the right side of each Item, you will see a menu with a list of options that can be specified for each Item. This is the starting point for managing Items. Below, we will have a closer look at each option in this menu:

This panel lets you add additional information to the Item that can be then used for content management, classification and reporting.

Item Details Panel

Status: When the Item is finished and ready to be used, select Published from the drop down menu. Read more about Item Status in our tutorial.

Description/Source/Notes: These areas allow the author to add some additional notes on the Item. Text entered in these areas is searchable in the Author Site but will not at any stage be made visiable to the student.

Scoring Type: Learnosity supports 3 different types of scoring methods on items: Per Question, Dichotomous, and Dependent (EBSR).

Acknowledgements: Copyright Acknowledgements can be added here. Acknowledgements entered here can be configured to dynamically appear on the Activity Outro Item. This is particularly useful for Adaptive Activities as you won't know which Items will appear in the Activity.

Delete a Question/Feature from an Item

To delete a Question/Feature, click on the trash can icon that appears on the right toolbar of the Question/Feature. The first click will ask you to confirm the action, and a second click will delete the Question/Feature.

Tagging is an effective instrument in Learnosity that helps manage content and create reports. Read more about tagging an item here.

In an Adaptive Assessment, Items are selected dynamically so that the difficulty of each item is adapted to the estimated ability of the user. Click here for more information or check out our adaptive demo.

For Item Adaptive assessments, the psychometrically calculated difficulty measure (calculated using the Rasch model) is entered in the Difficulty field.

Action Builder

This builder can be used to control some events on an Item. For example, disabling navigation buttons, automatically playing audio or video, or disabling a question. For more information, see our docs page on the Action Builder.

This panel will show the full audit history of the Item you are editing, indicating actions performed by users and their usernames. History will cover the following:

  • Adding/removing Questions or Features,
  • Editing Questions or Features that may be attached to this item,
  • Adding/removing tags,
  • Any content or detail changes to the Item.

Item History

Each entry you see in the history, indicating that some modifications to the Item took place, will have a Show Difference link. By clicking on it you will see a new window open with the Old content in the left pane, and the New content in the right pane. You can compare the versions and see the difference as shown in Figure 8.

By clicking on Show Source Diffs, you will see the changes that have been made to the underlying code. Any changes will be highlighted in yellow.
