Create an Activity


Activity settings are very similar to those of an Item. Every Activity will need an Activity Reference, and all reference numbers must be unique and contain ASCII printable characters, except double quotes, single quotes, and with no more than 150 characters. The Description is optional - it will allow you to enter more information about the Activity and is searchable in the Activity page. Just like Items, the Activity Status must be set to Published in order for the Activity to be used.

Adding the Items

Item List is where you will add your Items to the activity. Click on Add to get started.

  • Use the Search filter to search for the Items for the Activity.
  • To the left of each Item Reference, tick the box to select the Item. You may only select Published Items for the Activity.
  • Click Select on the top right of the page.
  • The Items selected will now be in the Item List section.
  • Items will be numbered in the order they will appear on the Activity.
  • You can also reorder or delete Items here.

There are 2 types of rendering options to choose from: Assess and Inline. You will need to confirm with your development team which option to choose.

  • Select Assess if you want your Items to appear one at a time on a page using the Learnosity Assess wrapper.
  • Select Inline if your development team will be placing the Items on the Page.

Configuration Settings

Title: When the Activity Title and Activity Subtitle are enabled, the title will be displayed on top of every Item page. When disabled, it will only show on the Activity start screen.

Activity Title: Enter the Activity Title.

Activity Subtitle: Enter subtitle. This will appear underneath the Activity Title.

Intro Item: When enabled, a Select button will appear to select the Intro Item (there is a default Intro Item as well). This will appear to the user at the beginning of the activity.

Outro Item: When enabled a Select button will appear to select the Outro Item (there is a default Outro Item as well). This will appear to the user at the end of the activity.

Previous: The Previous Button will appear in the Activity. This is enabled by default.

Next: The Next Button will appear in the Activity. This is enabled by default.

Pause: Allows students to pause the Activity.

Save: Students will be able to save and quit an Activity and resume at a later date.

Submit: A Submit button will appear on the Activity. This is enabled by default.

Fullscreen: A button will be present allowing the student to view the Activity in Fullscreen. This is enabled by default.

Response Masking: Students can mark X over responses. This does not affect reporting. You can read more here.

TOC Item Count: Item 1 of _ will be shown on the Navigation bar.

Calculator: Shows a Basic Calculator throughout the Activity.

On Submit Redirect URL: If activity is submitted, the student will be redirected to this page.

On Discard Redirect URL: Test Administrator/Proctor cancels and discards the test. The student will be redirected to this page.

Intro Item Select: Intro Item will be the first Item on the Activity. This Item will not be shown in reports.

Outro Item Select: Outro Item will be the last Item on the Activity. This Item will not be shown in reports.

Warning if Question(s) not attempted: If the student progresses onto the next Item without answering the current Item, a warning message will appear. This message can be configured on a per client basis.

Confirmation window on submit: Students are asked to confirm that they wish to submit their tests.

Scroll to the test element on test start: Scrolls to the top of the assessment when the assessment first loads (as opposed to the top of the page). Only applicable when assessment is embedded on the page.

Scroll to Top on Item change: When navigating to the next Item in the assessment, the page will scroll up to the top of the Item container (as opposed to the top of the assessment).

Exit Secure Browser: Closes secure browser after activity is completed.

Acknowledgements: This will allow acknowledgements entered into the Item and Question level Acknowledgement field to be displayed in the Activity Outro Item. If there is already an Outro Item attached, the Acknowledgement will appear below it.

Table of Contents: A table of contents will appear to the right hand side of the Item, allowing the student to easily navigate between Items in the Activity. This is enabled by default.

On Save Redirect URL: If the activity is saved, the student will be redirected to this page.

Show Colour Scheme: Allows the user to change background and foreground colours.

Show Font Size: Allows the user to adjust the font size from small to XX Large.

Show Zoom: Allows the user to zoom in and out using keyboard shortcuts.

Progress Bar: A progress bar charting the student's progress is displayed during the Activity. This is enabled by default.

Timer: A timer will appear during the Activity. The default time is 25:00 (mins).

Item Count: An Item counter will appear during the Activity. For example, on the first Item it will say 1 of 10 (if there are 10 Items in the Assessment).

Scrolling Indicator (Horizontal-Fixed only): A blue downward arrow will appear to indicate to the student that there is more content "below the fold", and that they should scroll down to view all the content.

Idle Timeout Warning: An idle timeout is automatically triggered after a given period of inactivity. The Idle Timeout Countdown Time (sec) is the time the student has to close the dialog box (60 sec by default), or the test will be automatically saved. Idle Timeout Interval (sec): The number of seconds of inactivity before the countdown clock will show (default - 300 sec).

Auto Save: This is how often the test will automatically save during the Activity. Auto Save UI Indicator: Enables a visual indicator when the test is auto saved. Auto Save Interval (sec): The number of seconds between each auto save.

Assessment Time (sec): Enter time limit for the Assessment.

End Assessment Warning Time (sec): You can enter a time that will give the student a warning when there is a few minutes left. Time must be given in seconds, e.g. 300 sec.

Remote Control Countdown Time (sec): Count down time in seconds shown to the remote control administrator before saving and exiting the Activity. A remote control options demo can be found here.

Limit Type: If a time for the test has been set, a soft limit will not force the student to submit immediately while a hard limit will force the student to submit.

Layout: There are three options here: Main, Horizontal, Horizontal-Fixed. Check out layout for more details on each.

Item Transition: Specifies the transition animation between each Item in the Activity. Options are Fade, Slide and Toggle. The default option is set to Fade.

Font Size: Change the size of the text throughout the Activity. If font size has been specified at Question level then the Question fontsize will overwrite the Activity fontsize.

Transition Speed (ms): Speed of screen moving to the next Item.

Custom Stylesheet: Talk to Learnosity about adding a custom stylesheet.

Configuration Panel: Teacher/Administrator live remote controls.

Password: This is the Teacher/Administrator password.

Save & Quit: Teacher/Administrator can save students work and close tests.

Exit & Discard: Teacher/Administrator cancel students tests.

Extend Assessment Time: Teacher/Administrator can extend student time.

Client Side Scoring: when enabled, it restricts the validation object being sent to the user’s browser for assessments.

Distractor Rationale: This is a way of adding extra information onto the question to give the user additional information on the answer(s) they have given. This is something which can be implemented by your development team. You can read more about it here

Distractor Rationale per Response: Once enabled you can explain the rationale behind each individual response in the question. You will not be able to view a preview of this in the Author Site. Your developers will decide how to display this. Tutorials on this can be found here.

Label Settings: Allows to add custom names to labels in an Activity.

Override Labels: Click on this button to assess labels menu and change the name of any label.


Tags can be added to an Activity just like they are added to Items. Simply enter your tag into the box provided and as you start to type it select it from the list.


The Preview allows you to test the Activity as it will appear to students. All changes made to the configuration settings will be updated in the Preview.


Advanced section will give you access to the Activity JSON. The JSON is rendered from the settings configured in the Edit panel. We would recommend that authors do not use this unless otherwise instructed to by Learnosity.


The Activity report gives a detailed analysis of all Items, questions, images, configuration settings etc. that are used in the Activity.


Just as in Item any edits that are made to a saved Activity are recorded as well as the name of the person that made the edit. In the History tab of a saved Activity click on Show Difference to see the difference and the changes will be shown highlighted in yellow.
